Interpretation:

Jerry: My apologies. This interpretation may not be suitable for younger readers. The more I thought about these lyrics the more disturbed I became and thought I would share the true meaning with you (then have Darryl rip it all to shreds). So Darryl, in reading these lyrics a few things tipped me off as to it's true meaning. I'll start by explaining my theory about this song. This song is about a black guy who was with a lady that died. He had a younger white female friend that was there for him. Soon after the funeral, they ended up becoming more than just friends. This is all summed up in the lines 'Now that your rose is in bloom, a light hits the gloom on the grave.' Most of the song follows suit. In the beginning he speaks of a graying tower alone on the sea. Well, an obvious reference to a phallus, alone and graying is usually a sign of getting older. The reason I believe she is white is due to the 'You became the light on the dark side of me' though I assume that could be 'mood' related, but I doubt it. Also, he was addicted to love, so he needed it after his wife died hence his willingness to go along with someone so young that it made him question it (I quote, "The more I get of you, stranger it feels.") I'm curious what your initial reactions are to these lyrics Darryl!

Darryl: Jerry, your view from the gutter never ceases to amaze me. There is absolutely nothing sexual about this song. When I hear the terms "tower", "sea", and "light", my first thought is not SEX but Lighthouse. This man has been warning the public of danger for a long time, with no help. We're not told what the warning is about, only that it is fatal in some form. Now he has found someone who will both love him and watch his back, assisting him in his quest. The harder the message is to communicate, the more her help means to him. Although I find your demented view quite fascinating, the real meaning of the lyrics is much more mundane.

Jerry: Might I start by saying "Oh my god!". I'm not quite sure where to begin since I'm not really sure what you just told me. I do find it rather amazing that you've went from diagnosing the lyrics of a song and saying that it was essentially a threesome between a guy, a mom and her daughter (Third Eye Blind - Never Let You Go) to not seeing anything sexual about this song. Could you please elaborate as to what part of the lyrics are sending you in this completely left-field interpretation?!

Darryl: Okay, I'm going to assume that you can understand the image of the tower and the now standard "love is a drug" lines. The way a more modern lighthouse works is it shines a light in a beam and then rotates the beam in a circle. In the dark of night the light shines from one side and the other is "the dark side", or the unprotected side. In bad weather the light may be increased to make it easier to see. The rocks and shoals around the tower are "the grave". His new love has come out of the dark graveyard surrounding him to love and help him.

So, how in the world are you going to interpret the sea and snow references in your perverted interpretation?

Jerry: Dude, seriously... Are you smoking crack?

Darryl: Hey, I'm not that far off!

Jerry: Ok, I'll answer your last question first. There have been a lot of sexual innuendos that have to do with the ocean or the sea. For instance, "It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean." or "Slap that _____ and ride the wave."... Hold on.. Just violated myself... Ok, no more of that... Where was I? Oh, the snow reference. The snow reference could be a number of things. Most likely it is a reference to being stuck inside during a storm and having nothing better to do than "get it on".

As for your interpretation, I can see where you may have a wrong turn or so. I will admit that it is 'possible' that he is not referring to his phallus and instead comparing the new younger girl to a lighthouse. The reference would fit as she is there in his time of darkness, though I'm still stuck on the white meat/dark meat reference. But what do you mean by, "His new love has come out of the dark graveyard"? Are we talking about a necrophiliac? If so, your interpretation is much more perverted than mine!

Darryl: You've not only violated yourself! You've violated me and anyone else reading this! Maybe I don't get out enough, but I'm not familiar with either of the sea references you mention. As to your necrophiliac comment, you're obviously WAY too far into this perversion approach. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go take a shower with some very strong soap.

Jerry - Summary: I'm sorry but I just see this song all too clearly to comprehend anything other than what is actually going on in the song. Seal is one perverted dude. It's not MY fault. And I'm not the one talking about getting nookie at the graveyard. I'm thinking it's both you and Seal that are the perverts and the reading audience and I are the innocent bystanders caught up in your perversions.

Seal - Kiss From A Rose

There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea.
You became the light on the dark side of me.
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill.

But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and,
The light that you shine can be seen.

Baby,
I might compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave.
Ooh,
The more I get of you
Stranger it feels, yeah.
And now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave.

There is so much a man can tell you,
So much he can say.

You remain,
My power, my pleasure, my pain.
Baby, to me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby?

But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen.

Baby,
I might compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave.
Ooh, the more I get of you
stranger it feels, yeah.

Now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the grave,

I've been kissed by a rose on the grave,
I've been kissed by a rose
...And if I should fall, at all
I've been kissed by a rose

There is so much a man can tell you,
So much he can say.

You remain
My power, my pleasure, my pain.

To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby.

But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and,
the light that you shine can be seen.

Baby,
I might compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave,
Ooh, the more I get of you
Stranger it feels, yeah

Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave.

Yes I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave.
Ooh, the more I get of you
stranger it feels, yeah.

Now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the grave,

Now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the grave
